What's developmentally happening at 3 months
Three months is often the calm before the storm. Many babies sleep in longer night stretches (6-8 hours) and take more predictable naps. Circadian rhythm is well established. This is also when you'll hear the dreaded phrase: the 4-month sleep regression is coming.
Enjoy this stage, but know that at 3 months sleep is about to change fundamentally. Around 16 weeks, sleep architecture matures — your baby starts cycling through lighter sleep stages like an adult. Many parents describe this as 'everything falling apart overnight.' It's developmental and unavoidable.
Common sleep challenges at this age
- Naps getting shorterAs wake windows lengthen, naps often become more organized but still short. Aim for enough total sleep, not perfect nap length.
- Bedtime resistanceOften means bedtime is too late (baby is overtired) or too early (not tired yet). Track wake windows before the final nap.
- Preparing for the 4-month regressionUse these weeks to practice putting baby down drowsy but awake, establish a consistent bedtime routine, and set up a dark sleep space.
- Rolling onto tummyOnce a baby can roll both ways, you do not need to reposition them. The AAP still recommends starting on the back.
Recent and upcoming transitions
What just changed
Bedtime has moved earlier; night stretches are getting longer.
What's coming next
The 4-month regression is the big one — expect sleep disruption around 15-18 weeks as sleep cycles mature permanently.
When to talk to your pediatrician
Reach out if any of the following apply at 3 months:
- Loss of previously acquired skills
- Not bringing hands to midline
- Not cooing or making eye contact
- Extreme startling or stiffness
Trust your instincts. If something feels off with your baby's sleep, breathing, feeding, or development, call your pediatrician. This page is not a substitute for medical care.
Common questions about 3 months sleep
How long should a 3 month old nap?
Individual naps typically range from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Total daytime sleep is usually 4-6 hours across 3-4 naps.
What time should a 3 month old go to bed?
Bedtime is typically 7:30-9pm. At this age, a consistent bedtime within a 60-minute window is more important than a specific clock time.
How many naps does a 3 month old need?
Usually 3-4 naps. If your baby takes a short catnap late in the day, don't count it strictly — it just helps avoid an overtired bedtime.
Why is my 3 month old fighting sleep?
Most common reasons: wake window is too long (overtired) or too short (undertired), the room is too bright, or the 4-month regression is starting early. Track wake windows and sleep associations.
Can I sleep train a 3 month old?
Formal sleep training is not recommended before 4 months. You can start gentle habits: consistent bedtime routine, dark room, and occasional drowsy-but-awake practice.
