What's developmentally happening at 12 months

A 12-month sleep regression is real but mild compared to 4 and 8 months. It's driven by a burst of language and motor milestones: walking, first words, and a bigger sense of self. Whole milk transition may happen this month. The bottle is often being phased out.

Resist the urge to drop to one nap during the 12-month regression. Research shows most babies aren't ready for a single nap until 14-16 months. Dropping early tends to cause early mornings and overtired bedtimes.

Common sleep challenges at this age

  • 12-month regressionUsually 2 weeks of disrupted naps and bedtime. Stay consistent.
  • Bottle to cup transitionPediatric recommendation is to be off the bottle by 12-15 months. Introduce the sippy/straw cup at meals.
  • Nap refusal appearing 'ready for 1 nap'Usually a false signal. Hold 2 naps until you see 10-14 consecutive days of morning-nap refusal.
