What's developmentally happening at 13 months

Thirteen months typically still wants two naps but the morning nap is shrinking. Walking is usually well underway, and language is accelerating. Most families are fully on whole milk or continuing breastfeeding.

Watch for true 2-to-1 readiness signs: consistent refusal of the morning nap for 10-14 days, very short naps, or both naps pushing bedtime much later than normal. If only one of those is present, you're not ready yet.

Common sleep challenges at this age

  • Morning nap getting shortNormal. Cap it at 45-60 minutes to preserve the afternoon nap.
  • Bedtime creeping laterUsually a sign the afternoon nap is too long or too late. Cap at 2 hours and wake by 3:30pm.
  • Separation anxiety resurgenceOften reappears around 12-15 months. A lovey and predictable routine help.
